The new Australian Cultural Leisure Classifications (ACLC) 2001 are aimed at developing a common set of classifications to promote a more unified body of statistical information. This will correct the present situation where the current range of data are not all comparable and complementary, often because the underlying definitions and concepts used differ between sources.
The ACLC classifications are intended to form the basis of future culture and leisure statistical compilations by the ABS. The Classifications are also expected to be adopted widely by users of culture and leisure data in Australia, including organisations outside the ABS which need to design, organise administrative data or otherwise collect information.
