    The Directory of Culture and Leisure Statistics (Cat. No. 1143.0.55.001) is a web-based product that is available freely on the ABS website.
  • Cultural Funding by Government, Australia 2006-07
    This publication, released by the ABS on 7 August 2008, contains estimates of Australian public funding for arts and cultural activities, facilities and services for the three years from 2004-05 to 2006-07. Estimates for the three levels of government have been compiled from administrative by-product data obtained by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) from annual reports and budget papers, and from information provided by selected Australian Government authorities (including the Australia Council), state and territory governments and local government authorities.   • Television, Film and Video Production and Post-Production Services, Australia, 2006-07
    According to figures released by the ABS on 22 July 2008 news, current affairs, sport and light entertainment and variety programs accounted for almost three-quarters ($986 million) of total television production costs ($1,366 million) in 2006-07 (cat. no. 8679.0).
  • Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications Second Edition, July 2008
    This is the second edition of the Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications, with the first edition release in 2001. The classifications are part of the commitment of the ABS to develop national standards for culture and leisure information. This edition, released by the ABS on 16 July 2008, is intended to form the basis for future statistical compilation in the fields of culture and leisure by the ABS and other organisations.   • Performing Arts Australia 2006-07
    The publication contains information about performing arts in Australia, with separate breakdowns provided for: music and theatre production; and performing arts venues. Data include: number of businesses, income, expenditure, employment, key characteristics by state, and selected information broken down by income size and employment size. Also includes information on performances, attendances, seating capacity and size of performing arts venues (catalogue no. 8697.0).
  • Work in Selected Culture and Leisure Activities, April 2007
    This publication presents results from the Survey of Work in Selected Culture and Leisure Activities, conducted in April 2007. It presents information on the number and basic demographic characteristics of persons involved in paid or unpaid work in selected culture and leisure activities over a 12 month period (catalogue no. 6281.0). The 2007 Survey of Work in Selected Culture and Leisure Activities was conducted throughout Australia as part of the ABS Monthly Population Survey (MPS). The survey was previously conducted in 1993, 1997, 2001 and 2004.
  • Digital Game Development Services, Australia, 2006-07
    Australia's digital game developers generated $136.9 million in income during 2006-07, according to estimates released in April 2008 by the ABS. The 45 game developers reported an operating profit before tax of $8.5 million and an operating profit margin of 6.2%. The major source of income was the provision of game development services ($116.9 million), with most of that income (93% or $108 million) coming from overseas businesses.   • Employment in Culture, Australia 2006
    This publication presents summary data on selected cultural occupations and industries from the 2006 Census of Population and Housing. The tables show the number and selected characteristics, such as age, income and hours worked, of persons in Australia employed in cultural occupations and cultural industries for their main job. Released by the ABS on 27 February 2008 (catalogue no. 6273.0).
  • Arts and Culture in Australia: A Statistical Overview, 2008
    The latest release issued by the ABS on 26 May 2008 includes up-to-date data, including updated Census figures. This edition (catalogue no. 4172.0) also includes five feature articles:

  • Cultural Funding by Government, Australia - 2005-06
    This publication contains estimates of Australian public funding for arts and cultural activities, facilities and services for the three years from 2003-04 to 2005-06. Estimates for the three levels of government have been compiled from administrative by-product data obtained by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) from annual reports and budget papers, and from information provided by selected Australian Government authorities (including the Australia Council), state and territory governments and local government authorities. Detailed estimates of local government funding of arts and cultural activities are not available for this edition of this publication but are expected to be available for a future edition, when the ABS begins to classify local government data by a more detailed Local Government Purpose Classification.
  • Attendance at Selected Cultural Venues and Events, Australia - 2005-06
    During the 12 months before interview in 2005-06, about 85% (13.6 million people) of the Australian population aged 15 years and over (16.0 million) attended at least one of the cultural venues and events asked about in the survey. The highest attendance rates were at cinemas (65% of people), zoological parks and aquariums (36%), libraries (34%) and botanic gardens (34%).
  • Voluntary Work, Australia - 2006
    This publication contains results from the national Voluntary Work Survey conducted throughout Australia from March to July 2006 as part of the General Social Survey (GSS). This is the third detailed survey conducted by the ABS on this topic. Previous Voluntary Work Surveys were conducted in June 1995 and over four quarters in 2000. The major aim of the survey was to collect data on rates of participation in voluntary work, hours contributed, characteristics of people who volunteer, the types of organisations they work for and the activities they undertake. Information on whether people made monetary donations to organisations and the types of organisations donated to were also collected. Donor information was previously collected along with voluntary work in 2000.
  • Children's Participation in Cultural and Leisure Activities, Australia - Apr 2006
    This publication presents results from the Survey of Children's Participation in Cultural and Leisure Activities conducted in April 2006. While the publication primarily provides information about the participation of children aged 5 to 14 years in cultural, sporting and other leisure activities, details on children's use of computers and the Internet and their involvement in homework and other study are also presented.
